Avast, me hearties! How better to celebrate 'Talk like a pirate day' than to grace your ears with pirate treasure*?
Pieces of eight (also called a 'Spanish dollar') were once part of an informal 'international currency' in the 16th to 18th centuries. Those who sailed the seven seas could purchase and trade using these coins as their value was based on their actual precious metal weight*. Typical originals were made from 25.56 grams of silver.
Piece of eight are called such because they could be cut into eight pieces (eight 'reales'). That seems a somewhat laborious way to make change!
